Everybody loves dinosaurs!
This activity topic is fun and can be tailored to be suitable for all
ages. When given to one primary class a young pupil proclaimed "I
used to want to be an ice-cream man when I grow up but now I want
to dig up dinosaurs!"
Topic items can include:
Introduction to dinosaurs -
when they lived - where they lived.
- Geography
- Geology
- Natural History
- Evolution
Fossils - how are they formed,
how are they discovered and how are they put back together? What
do the bones do and how is the animal reconstructed?
- Geology
- Anatomy (skeleton and muscles)
- Engineering (bio-engineering)
- Making moving models:
 Find
where the jaw hinges and study the muscles that open and close the
jaw
 Cut
out and make a moving model
Comparison with modern animals
- horns, teeth, claws, behaviour.
- Comparative anatomy
- Ecology
- Size scaling (length, area
and volume)
What did they sound like? What
did they look like?
- Science of sound

- Resonance
- Reproduction with an electronic
oscillator
- Camouflage and display
- make and colour a triceratops mask!
Footprints, trackways, locomotion
and how fast could they go?
- Bio-mechanics of walking.
What makes a fast walker? What makes a slow walker?
- Forces, muscles and strength
of materials
- Distance and speed
- Scaling of physical attributes
and similarity of behaviour
Why did the largest creatures
on earth lay relatively small eggs?
- Respiration
- Diffusion of gases
- Growing up in a hostile
environment
Where are they now?
- Mass extinction
- Threats from the planet
- Threats from space
And if that's not enough you
can also excavate dinosaurs and join in the great dinosaur race
to demonstrate one of number of reasons why these fantastic creatures
become so successful.

dinosaurs!
